So, why are we doing this?
The decision to retire the SkyBell HD app, and subsequently the SkyBell HD 3.1 device a few years ago is multi-faceted, it started out because of changes that Android and iOS started to make that affected the SkyBell HD app, and the SkyBell cloud. The first change they made was how notifications were managed between apps and the OS layer. Customers on HD App were starting to not get notifications for events. Learning this, and seeing larger changes from Apple and Android coming down the path related to how they were changing data use and data security, as well as speed of response for features like live view and uploads to the cloud, we had to start work on updating the old HD app.
Over the past few years, we started working on a new app that allowed us to have the ability to grow and flex to the changes made by mobile phone makers and allow us the stay competitive within our industry and support our hardware line.
As we were working towards these goals, we realized that we needed to update the server architecture to also work with the new app and the current hardware. During all this, we reached out to all our chip vendors to get the on-chip code updates so we can update the Firmware to work with new servers, mobile devices, and the new app. That’s when we learned that the processor for the HD 3.1 was no longer updated by the vendor as they had retired their support for the now 10 plus year old chip.
With this news, we started to explore the options on how we can extend the life of the HD 3.1, because we knew some HD 3.1 devices were still on homes. We explored various work arounds but found that they were not to our standards for security and performance. The HD 3.1 processor was just too old to function properly with today’s code and security expectations.
Two years ago, we started to publicly announce the updates via the app using pop-ups and we started moving devices that would work such as HD 4.0, Trim Plus, Trim II Pro and Slimline devices over to the new SkyBell app and infrastructure; while at the same time finding solutions for users who were still on the HD 3.1 hardware and not able to move forward.
The decision was made to officially retire support for the SkyBell HD (Legacy) App on June 30th, 2024 and begin sunsetting the HD (Legacy) app as of March 3rd, 2025.
